MANCHESTER, NH – The Greater Manchester Chamber of Commerce is giving Small Business Saturday in the region a boost by providing a list of businesses that are taking part with special promotions. [See list below].
Small Business Saturday is this Saturday, Nov. 25, and aims to get holiday shoppers out to support local businesses after the frenzy of Black Friday, the traditional post-Thanksgiving holiday shopping kickoff.
“Small businesses are the heart of our business community and provide jobs, culture, and economic vitality to our region,” Cole Riel, director of small business and community development for the Greater Manchester Chamber said. “Small Business Saturday is a fantastic opportunity to support these hard-working business owners and to help them survive and thrive this holiday season.”
Riel added that small businesses tend to use local vendors and resources. “When you purchase from your local small business, you are keeping money here, in our community,” Riel said.
Manchester area businesses, as well as businesses across the state, are offering giveaways, raffles, sales, demonstrations, free samples and more to Saturday shoppers. Many also have special deals and other events planned as the holiday shopping season progresses. It’s not only retailers who are taking part – restaurants, art galleries, recreation businesses and more also are offering deals and promotions.
The chamber has gathered a list of promotions that small businesses in the greater Manchester area offering. It can be accessed on the chamber’s website. There is still time for area businesses to add their promotion to the listing, Riel said Monday.
The chamber will also host a Small Business Saturday kickoff at The Bookery, 844 Elm St. Shoppers can stop by on Saturday, beginning at 10 a.m., and pick up free coffee, tote bags, and a printed list of deals, while supplies last. Shoppers can also get a free copy of the 2023 Downtown Manchester Passport Program, which starts Saturday at participating businesses. Shoppers will have until Dec. 5 to get their passports signed at 10 businesses and return the passport to the chamber to be entered into raffle for $25 gift cards.
Small Business Saturday, sometimes called Shop Local Saturday, was launched by American Express in 2010 as a way to encourage consumers to support local businesses. In 2011, the U.S. Senate passed a resolution recognizing Small Business Saturday, and it’s observed in all 50 states.
Last year, consumers spent an estimated $184 billion across the U.S. on Small Business Saturday.
The American Express Small Business Impact Study, released last week, found that 88% of small business owners said small businesses need the support of customers in their community, given the current economic environment.
Some 55% anticipated that Small Business Saturday will make a significant contribution to their overall holiday sales this year.
A large majority of consumers surveyed – 78% – agreed that small businesses are essential to their community.
